Two major events started the parade of seceding US States. The first was the November 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln as the next US president. The second major event was President Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers to enter the military for a 3 month term. Here is a list of the Southern States that seceded:

The reason for the unity experienced in American dates back to the fires of revolution when the Union seceded from Great Britain. Since then people come form all over the world to the United States to share in this freedom. Long live democracy.

I believe Machiavelli is the answer. Though the term is much older and dates to Roman and Greek thinkers it began it's more current meaning from the writings of Machiavelli who used it to describe the states of Northern Italy, which were not monarchies.
