Lewis and Clark spent an entire day trying to capture a prairie dog, after they encountered their first prairie dog city which covered some four acres on September 7, 1804. The following April they sent one live prairie dog to Jefferson with the small party that returned downriver to St. Louis. Remarkably, the creature arrived alive. Lewis and Clark were explorers, leading the famous 1803 expedition - the Corps of Discovery - from the Missouri to the Pacific Ocean; a trek intended to study the land and its characteristics and report back to President Jefferson. Although Lewis and Clark were soldiers, as were most of their expedition members, it was not a warlike excercise but simply an information-gathering expedition which turned out to be hugely successful and was accomplished with only one death, thought to be from appendicitis.
