The Legislative branch of the U.S. government, commonly known as Congress, is primarily responsible for making laws. The Legislature also has the power to create the budget for the entire government, to declare war, and to establish foreign treaties.

Congress comprises two sets of elected representatives from each of the 50 states, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The two bodies work independently of one another, which helps ensure neither group acquires too much power.
They make the laws of the United States. They also declare war, and ratify treaties.
