As a military leader during America's Revolutionary War, George Washington was superbly courageous and tireless in his planning and organization; at the same time, he was occasionally over-confident in his reckoning of the chances of the Continental Army against British troops. As president, he was often seen as aloof and even imperious, with scathing attacks made against him on this latter count by critics during his second term; and yet, his great strength was to say 'no' to even more power and influence than he already had, choosing to retire rather than continue to lead the nation as president at the conclusion of his second term in office.
