The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) nominated Pranab Mukherjee, former Finance Minister, as its candidates. He was opposed by former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Purno Sangma, on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). After vote-counting on July 22, Mukherjee (UPA) was elected President with 713,763 (69.3%) electoral votes in his favour against NDA candidate Sangma's 315,987 (30.7%). It was the seventh time consecutively since 1982 that a candidate nominated by the Congress Party (UPA) has been elected President of India.
