This was the third major fight between the Muslims and the Meccans, in which the latter beseiged the stronghold city of Yathrib, (later al-madinat al-Nabi). Fortunately for Mohammed and the defenders, the city had been recently fortified with a dry moat, or ditch, which the Meccans couldn't breach.
