Political cartoonists have, for many decades, used the donkey to represent the Democratic party and the elephant to represent the Republican party. The reason for these choices is not obvious, however, in some sense the Democratic party is seen as being more prone to populism or even demagoguery, hinted at by the foolish braying of the donkey, and the Republican party has the intimidating quality of a gigantic elephant, a creature which because of its size, seemingly can go where it wants to, ignoring all obstacles. Both of these animal symbols are satirical in nature. Political cartoonists have reason to satirize both parties.

The Republican Party claims to want small government but they don't deliver. The Democrat Party skirts around the issue of big government but they give a wink and a nod to their followers that they support it, which they do. The Libertarian Party actually want smaller government but they are never given the chance to deliver it. The Green Party wants to deliver communism under the guise of environmentalism. http://www.garyjohnson2012.com
Members of political parties have all the freedom they want to vote against their parties. The reason this is rare is because if the member wants to get anywhere further in his/her political career, he/she will need a LOT of support from the party. And your party will not help you if you try to vote against it on important issues to the party. Nobody wants to be a pariah in his/her own party.
