In 1912, after Sun Yixian(AKA Sun Yat-Sen) stepped down as president in favor for him, Yuan Shikai tried to foolishly create another dynasty. However, the military didn't back him and opposition divided the nation.

The May Fourth Movement is viewed as a climax of the New Culture Movement which began loosely in 1915 and ended in 1921. The May Fourth Movement was anti-imperialist, cultural, and political movement protesting the newly formed Republic of China's response to the Treaty of Versailles and the concession of the Shandong Peninsula.
