According to the American playwright Arthur Miller, there weren't many differences. His play The Crucible is an extended consideration of the similarities between theMcCarthyism of the 1950s and the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 (NOT 1962). Both periods in America's history showcase the darker side of human nature and our ability to exhibit a mob mentality under the guidance of authority figures. The most significance difference would be that McCarthyism effected the entire country, whereas the Witch Trials were limited to a much smaller region of the nation.
