What was the colonial reaction to the stamp act?

The Stamp Act of 1765 was the fourth Stamp Act to be passed by the Parliament of Great Britain and required all legal documents, permits, commercial contracts, newspapers, wills, pamphlets, and playing cards in the American colonies to carry a tax stamp. The British hoped to raise funds to cover their costs from the French and Indian War.

The Stamp Act Congress was a meeting on October 19, 1765 in New York City of representatives from nine of the Thirteen Colonies. They discussed and acted upon the Stamp Act, eventually creating unsigned petitions that were called the "Declaration of Rights and Grievances".

Four points not specific to the Stamp Act were asserted :

1) Only colonial assemblies had a right to tax the colonies.

2) Trial by jury was a right, and the use of Admiralty Courts was abusive.

3) The colonists possessed all the Rights of Englishmen.

4) Lacking colonial participation, Parliament could not represent the colonies.

The first is famously referred to as "no taxation without representation".
