The Cornerstone Speech by Alexander Stephens was one in which he laid out the differences between the Confederacy and the United States.
It is so called because of a single paragraph, which begins with:
"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea[of the equality of races]; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery-subordination to the superior race-is his natural and normal condition."
The speech was given at Savannah, Georgia on March 21, 1861.
