The US Supreme Court is head of the Judicial Branch of government. The "inferior" courts in this branch are:US District CourtsUS Court of International TradeUS Court of Appeals Circuit Courts
The ruling of the court below the Supreme Court will be upheld. The Supreme Court is similar to an appeals court. If they don't want to take the case, then whatever the court ruling was will stand.
There are 3 "levels" of courts that make up the judicial branch. These are: 1. Trial courts 2. Courts of appeal 3. Court of last resort. Another system of levels comprised within the judicial system is district courts, circuit courts, and appellate courts.
The names (or existence) of particular courts will vary state by state, but generally states have a trial courts which has general jurisdiction, trial courts with specific jurisdiction over some specific type of case such as traffic offenses, appeals courts, and a state supreme court.
The only state courts eligible to have cases reviewed by the US Supreme Court are the state supreme courts or court of appeals immediately under the state supreme court (if that court declines review), because a case must exhaust all appellate options before any party can petition the US Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari. State supreme courts can avoid having their cases reviewed by never accepting a case that involves questions of federal or constitutional law. Barring that, they could pay careful attention to case law and not make a ruling in conflict with an established precedent. Barring that, they can only hope whoever loses the state supreme court appeal doesn't petition the US Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari or, if they do, hope that the case isn't sufficiently compelling that it attracts four of the Justices' interest.
