Some of his ideas were that a president's time in office should not exceed 2 terms. Franklin D. Rooselvelt is the only president to do so. Also, his idea of appointing a group of advisors to help him run the country (now days know as the Cabinet) is still in order today.
George Washington's basic belief or philosophy was that no one should have much power over another. In George Washington by Jeremy Roberts, it reads, "He reaffirmed his commitment to democracy in the strongest possible terms." Jeremy Roberts is talking about how when given the chance to take all of the power for himself after the Revolutionary War, Washington denied it because he had lived his life by the principles of integrity and honesty. He did not believe that one man should have more power than another. Henry Lee described George as "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." This quote shows that Washington cared more about his country's welfare more than his own.
There is continuing debate amongst scholars of American history as to the extent of George Washington's religious beliefs. He was baptized in the Church of England and served on the vestry (lay council) for his local church. During his life he spoke often about the value of right action and of seeking and offering thanks for the "blessings of heaven". His adopted daughter, Nelly Custis Lewis, said in a letter that he would often accompany his wife to church services but would leave before communion with the other non-communicants, because the King was the head of the Church of England. In private letters and correspondence, George Washington made over 200 references from passages in The Bible and was known to have had daily prayer and Bible reading in his private study. Some analysts have quoted him as being a deist due to the secular nature of the constitution.
George Washington did not officially belong to a political party but was an avid supporter of Alexander Hamilton and his Federalist Party. Characterisitics of this party are:
mostly conservative (Jefferson represented States Rights over Central Government way of thinking)
tended to support the more traditional ties with Britain and the Monarcy while Jeffersonians supported France
Believed in a strong, central government otherwise known as "High Federalism" (somewhat the opposite of a confederacy).
Believed in Hamilton's argument for "implied powers" now accepted by modern-day Supreme Court Justices as allowing for "flexibility" in the Constitution when used to strengthen both the Executive and the Federal government as a whole
George Washington and Alexander Hamilton were in company with John Adams, founding father and a Federalist.
The strongly populist culture at that time quickly began to push Federalism to the fringe and the party died out in just two or three decades.
Wahington summarized his advice for the country in his farewell address, written when he left the Presidency. Please see the related question and links for what he said.
