What were the strengths and weaknesses of the Continential Army?

STRENGTHS: 1] Fighting their own land for their homes and freedom.

2] Colonists knew how to use firearms and fight Indian-style

3] George Washington was a great leader

4] Received military and financial aid from foreign countries

5] Only had to transport supplies a short distance

6] Many colonists were used to surviving great hardships

WEAKNESSES: 1] One/third of the Americans were loyalists and remained loyal to England.

2] Inadequate finances because Congress could not tax and only request that individual states send financial Aid for the army.

3] Had virtually no factories to make military supplies; had to rely on foreign support to supply the army

4] Shortage of supplies and ammo

5] Had only a small navy

6] Lacked training and discipline because of short term enlistment

Weaknesses: Since the Continental Army was made up of farmers and merchants and basic colonial/ early American men, they didn't have much training or skill. Plus, as farmers kept rebelling and taking stands against the British government, the farmers in the Continental Army were forced to put their loyalty to the test: Would they join their friends against the government, or join the government against their friends?
