John C Fremont was one of the people involved in the founding of CA, but he also did many things. As a young man he with with Lewis and Clark. President Polk later sent him to CA to scope out the area and the size of the Mexican army. They told the Mexican government that he was going to survey CA. At one point, while near Mission San Juan Bastista the army trapped him and his small group of men on one the mountains. In the night they left going down the backside while the army slept on the front side. While in CA Fremont made a stop at the Sutter's Fort to get an agreement from Sutter to be part of the take over of the government when it happened. When Fremont and his men came back to CA it was at the start of the gold rush in 1849 and to declare the CA republic. They took the Mexican governor hostage and took him to Sutter's Fort to be held, put up the Bear Flag, and declared CA a republic. A year later in 1850 CA became a state. Fremont, later, will consider a run for president, be accused of salting a gold mine and cheating people, and he will die unhappy and alone in a little house in Columa, CA.
