A nation has a flag for identification. They have been historically used to determine who your allies are on a battlefield, and also used as a symbol of national pride. Flags were also used mainly on the high seas to identify a certain nations ship.
The flag of the USA is arguably the most recognised in the world and is also know as The Star Spangled Banner, Old Glory and the Stars and Stripes. The 13 stripes correspond to the 13 original colonies and the 50 stars to the current number of states in the country.
Interpretations of the colours are varied, but generally the red of the USA flag represents valor, white stands for liberty or purity and blue represents justice, loyalty and perseverance.

The first flag of the United States of America was not chosen from a variety of designs. The Maritime Committee of the Continental Congress on June 14th, 1777 passed the first Flag resolution: "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." This resolution led to many different looking US flags but by 1818 the design settled in on 13 stripes recognizing the first 13 states with the addition of a star for each new state. By 1912 the proportions, sizes, shapes and arrangements of stars was further specified.

You are asking about what could be a variety of flags, but as an Alabamian I will state that one instance is the state flag of Alabama. It is based on the flag of St. Andrew, with the St. Andrew cross on a rectangular or square field. I believe there are also nautical flags similar. Perhaps other contributors can add to that angle!
