He was not innocent, he was guilty, and tons of evidence proved it. He didn't want the baby, he only wanted to ransom the baby for money. The wood for the ladder came from his attic; the misspellings in the ransom notes matched misspellings in papers at his house (what's the chances of that??); the go-between's phone number was written on his closet wall; and he was found in possession of the ransom money. Case closed.
