Sometimes the president gained power because he used the power granted by the constitution in a way not used in the past. Sometimes he gained power because the federal government became more powerful as a whole. Sometimes he gained power because Congress intentionally gave it to him.

Under the United States Constitution the Executive Branch enjoys certain powers but is limited in those by both the Supreme Court and the Congress of the United States. Simply stated the power of the Executive (the President) can increase or decrease due to underlying political factors and the personality of the person in office. George Washington was able to carry on an undeclared war with France due to the undivided nature of his support among the American People. Andrew Jackson exiled thousands of Indians west of the Mississippi over the objection of the Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln was able to suspend habeas corpus and other civil rights because the Union was in mortal peril. Woodrow Wilson nationalized the railroads to facilitate mobilization during a declared war.
There is a tendency to believe that Presidential power has grown since the beginning of the Republic in 1787. Historians will successfully point out that it has ebbed and flowed depending on the state of the Nation (War, Depression, National Emergencies etc.). What has grown greatly is the SIZE of the Executive Branch since the dawn of the 19th Century. Washington's executive consisted of a mere 40 persons, the largest department was that of the Postmaster General. Today the Executive is responsible for some 95 per cent of the Federal employees and employs several millions of people, not including the military (which are also the responsibility of the President). It should be noted that each of these bureaucracies was created by an Act of Congress and can be as easily taken away by that same elected body.

The presidential powers have increased due over time because of the major changes and reforms that have took en place in the US. Many include, trade and influential legislative powers regarding a bill.

FDR expanded presidential power by making the executive branch an institution. This made the executive branch equal to the other branches of the government.

Through national crisis, such as, the depression gave the government more power through government grants. These grants had strings attached. If the state took the grant then they had to do certain things the government wanted. Giving them more power. The government gets more power then the presedint gets more power.

Beaurocracies... Certain beaurocracies like the EPA (environmental protection agency) which were created by Congress. While the EPA is an independent orgionization, the president has ways of controlling their policies and regulations (which are the same as law) if you don't know, congress gave these agencies the right to pretty much make laws.

"State Of The Union is a speech the president must make from time to time to describe how the country is doing. The president uses this speech now days to discuss legislation, polocy, and explain what his goals are, and how he plans on achieving his goals. This pushes Congress into a Courner, forcing them to do what the president wants if it becomes supported.

Executive Order is a rule or regulation issued by the president that has the effect of legislation. This can be done without permission from congress. However, the Supreme court may overturn the order if it feels the order is unconstitutional.

The president's power has grown because of the alleged inefficiency and inaction on the part of congress to make decisions in a timely manner. Another answer would be that power corrupts and once you have some power, you may yet yearn for more.

Presidential power grows because Congress, the courts, and the public allow it to happen. It usually happens a little at a time and usually during war time or other time of national crisis. The first time a President may have stepped beyond the limits imposed by the U.S. Constitution was when Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He was very concerned about the possibility that his action may have been a violation of the Constitution. In contrast, modern presidents lose little sleep when they appear to violate the Constitution; in fact, presidential power has continued to expand for decades, and history shows that other than talk show hosts complaining about it, nothing is done to stop it.
