Personally I don't like being a part of a religion or community but I believe many people do as they fear to be alone and feel safe in numbers even if they disagree with the motif. Humans are social creatures and consequently many struggle with solitude.

A community provides services and protection. Try living all alone in a place with no city services, no cable, no water, no garbage pickup, no roads, no police or hospitals.
