Mary Brant was the consort of Sir William Johnson, 1st baronet of New York. Since Sir William was identified so closely with the aristocracy of the colonies, it would have been in Mary's self-interest to be loyal to the king.

In addition, the British crown had shown they were committed to preserving tribal territories, while the rebels were much more interested in gaining lands for themselves. Since Mary was of Mohawk lineage, this would have been important to her.
