∙ 15y agoThe 22nd Amendment was passed in 1951. It prevents a president from seeking a third term. George Washington had established the precedent of presidents stepping down after two terms, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt insisted that he could not step down during a World War. He therefore sought -- and won -- third and fourth terms. After Roosevelt's death, Congress went about amending the Constitution to establish Washington's precedent as the law.
