Why was the American Revolution started?

England set prices/taxes on products shipped to the colonies so high that the colonists could not afford them. The effort to become an independent nation was the only way they could find to solve this problem. In order to become an independent nation they had to fight England for the land.

After defeating France, and her Indian allies, in the Seven Year's War (1754-1763), or the "French and Indian War" as it was called in colonial America, Great Britain, as a result of the costly victory, was in deep debt. The British government, reasoning that the war was necessary to evict the French from British North America, looked to the American colonists to help pay a very small part of the incurred debt. The British Parliament in London, where American colonists were only "virtually represented," as the British government would style it, passed several taxes upon British goods purchased in the colonies. American colonists deeply resented these taxes, which they felt were passed without their consent, hence the expression "no taxation without representation." Eventually, all taxes were repealed by Parliament, save one, the tax on tea entering the colonies.

With three British cargo vessels docked in Boston waiting to unload their cargo of tea, the Patriot colonists struck first, destroying the hated cargo in the "Boston Tea Party." As punishment for this brazen act of defiance against the British Crown, Parliament passed several acts, known collectively as The Intolerable Acts" in the colonies, focused primarily upon Boston. The punishment of Boston by the Crown, attempting to exert its dominance over the colonies and make an "example" of Boston, to keep other colonies "in line," had the opposite, unintended effect of rallying other colonies to Massachusetts side. After hostilities erupted at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts in April of 1775 and subsequent battles, the Second Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain.

Many Americans also did not have the political freedom they wanted due to the fact that for the most part. the British King George, denied certain political rights to the colonies and of course demanded loyalty to the British Crown. This was not to the thinking of Colonial Statesmen and the common people of the Colonies, with the exception of the Loyalists who did not want a war with England and wished to remain part of the British Empire.
