Why were the delegates to the constitutional convention of 1787 sworn to secrecy?

They were planning to propose the replacement of the Articles of confederation with an entirely new basic instrument of government. They held it in secrecy so that nobody could influence the delegates and make it so they can change their minds about things.

By meeting with each other in order to create a new type of government, these people were basically trying to overthrow the government, which was the Articles of Confederation at that time. They had to keep it a secret even though each state knew that they were there in order to do so, legally, the states did not know if it could be done. They had to make an oath of secrecy.
