The bigger the snail is the older it is, also as snails age they move slower. Cracks on snails shell happen natrually, if they are dropped or something heavy is dropped on them, a crack can form. A young snail might have more cracks then a very old snail.
There's no legal age to eat snails. But they may be "chewy", so it is best to have teeth.

You can find snails in dark, damp and moist areas. You can also find them in rotting wood and under a pile of damp leaves.

Snails grow a shell that stays with them their entire life. They don't find larger ones as they grow.
Due to industrialization it becomes more difficult to find garden snails, but you can find them at riverbeds or ponds at countrysides. Another answer: in my experience, garden snails find you, and the problem is getting rid of them! Hostas and petunias seem to attract them.
If you call it "wild", you can find garden snails in your own front or back yard on a rainy day, or just after it rains!
