It could be mice, moles ,snakes, frogs or insects and small animals there are a lot of animals that dig holes in the ground. It also depends on where you live, sometimes it tends to be different animals in different areas. You coulld try digging one up, but be careful because you don't want to anger a porcupine or wasps/hornets
