I don't know if this is a red headed salamander, but I was walking by the riverbank (Covington, Louisiana) about ten minutes ago and saw this "critter." It was about 8-9 inches long, had a reddish head that was very large in proportion to its stumpy body. The head was triangular-shaped, just like a poisonous snake. It may have had a longer tail that had been cut. It was slimy looking, and had legs. It ran very fast in a wiggly motion like a snake. I did take a picture, but it is not very good.
The red headed woodpecker is not found in California.
No its a Northern Red Salamander.
A black lizard with a red head could potentially be a red-headed agama (Agama agama), which is a species of lizard native to Africa. These lizards are known for their striking coloration, with a black body and a vivid red head.
