The bottom of the feet can feel like leather due to the thickened skin, known as calluses, which forms as a protective response to friction and pressure from walking or standing. This toughened skin helps prevent blisters and injuries. Additionally, the skin on the soles has fewer oil glands, making it drier and contributing to a tougher texture. Factors like genetics, footwear choices, and overall foot care can influence this leathery feel.

In general, leather are sold in four forms, each with a slightly different feel. The top two forms are the full-grain and top-grain leather. New full-grain leather may feel more rough as the leather has not been sanded or buffed from the surface. Top-grain leather has been sanded and a finished coat applied resulting in a colder, plastic feel.
