Why is a horses frog called a frog?

It is a triangle shaped piece of cartilage in the centre of a horse's hoof. It is delicate yet it feels solid- and it can get infected if it is pierced by sharp objects. It is a jolly good shock absorber, and stops hard impact, from sport or general pleasure riding, from reaching the delicate bone. It is protected by the hoof wall, and the hoof wall, the horseshoe. Like below, it is easily damaged and if the stone or thorn isn't removed in time, your horse can become permanently lame and develope a limp.
