It's only one of many theories about what happened to the ancient Egyptians and has not been proven. It is more likely that the majority of modern day Egyptians are in some way, even if just in part, descended from the Ancients regardless of their faith. This is taking into consideration that the Egyptians of old, especially those from lower (northern) Egypt would have mixed with Roman, Greek, Macedonian, Byzantine & Arab conquerors (all of whom were lighter skinned people), they would have also mixed with people brought in as slaves or settlers from the glory days of ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians would have had a greater resemblence to the African peoples of Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia and in fact such people are still found in Upper (southern) Egypt and therefore would be theoretically speaking the closest descendants to the ancient Egyptians.

What percent of egyptians are Arab?

This depends on whether or not you consider Coptic Christians to be Arab. Most Copts would argue quite fervently that they are not Arabs and are, instead, the descendents of the Egyptians from the time of the Pharaohs. Some Copts even make the argument that most Muslim Egyptians are also descendants of Pharaonic Egyptians who had been converted by the small number of Arabian Arabs to Islam and the Arabized. If the Copts are (properly) not considered to be Arabs, but the Muslim Egyptians are, Egypt is 90% Arab. If the Copts are considered to be Arabs, Egypt is >99% Arab.

What was the role of the Copts during Napoleon's occupation of Egypt?

Before Napoleon's arrival in Egypt, the Copts were part of the Egyptian Mamluk Government as accountants. When Napoleon began to rule the country, he desired that the Copts would continue in their professions, so they ended up helping sustain Napoleon's government in Egypt. Unfortunately, because of this perceived alliance between the Copts and the French, there was strong Anti-Coptic sentiment throughout Egypt and there were several calls for genocide against the Copts. Thankfully, this never occurred, but lower level violence against Copts became more common.

What is the cultural background of the followers of the Coptic rite?

native Egyptian Christian. Copts form a major ethno-religious group that has ancient origins. Copts are Egyptians whose ancestors embraced Christianity in the first century. The word "Coptic" was originally used in Classical Arabic to refer to Egyptians in general (see etymology section), but it has undergone semantic shift over the centuries to mean more specifically Egyptian Christian after the bulk of the Egyptian population converted to Islam. In modern usage, it is frequently applied to members of the Coptic Orthodox Church irrespective of ethnic origin. Thus Ethiopian and Eritrean Christians (and Nubians before their conversion to Islam) were traditionally referred to as Copts, though this has been falling out of use since their Tewahedo Churches were granted their own patriarchs.
