∙ 9y agoThere are not precise dates as it goes back to such a long time. Roman concrete (opus caementicium) seems to have first appeared in the late 4th-early 3dr century BC. Its use increased when its unsightly surface begun to be covered by tufa stone work to make the structure more aresteric.
Over time, the Romans developed several techniques for the covering of concrete:
Opus incertum: small irregular stones.
Opus reticulatum: small squared tuff blocks laid in a diamond pattern.
Opus quadratum: regularly laid courses of ashlars (masonry with finely squared stones)
Opus latericium: regularly laid courses of brick.
Opus spicatum: brick laid in a herringbone pattern (the bricks were laid in rows of chevrons).
Opus vittatum: square tuff blocks intersected by brick bands at regular and irregular distances.
Opus africanum: vertical chains of upright blocks with alternating horizontal blocks.
Opus testaceum: thick horizontal brick work.
