The ancient Romans earned their livings pretty much the same way we earn ours but without the modern electronic conveniences. They were builders, shopkeepers, artisans, repairmen, farmers, sailors, agents, bankers, butchers, etc. They had some jobs that we no longer have, such as a public scribe to write letters for the illiterate and slave dealers.
