First, the egyptians removed internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, things like that. Then, they would coat the body in epsom salt. After 70 days, they would wrap the mummy in the cloth, and put them in their tombs, as their final resting place.
They don't still do this today, they only did it in ancient Egypt. After someone died, if they were wealthy enough, they would get mummified by a professional in a 70 day process.
First they cleaned the body with different herbs and stuff like that.
Then they would remove the brain by picking it out of the nose.
After that they would remove all other internal organs besides the heart
They would then stuff the body so it could keep its form and leave the corpse in the dessert to dry out.
Finally they would perform many ceremonies and rituals so that the mummy could live in the afterlife.
they took out the insides and left the heart because they believed that a god would weigh the heart and if the heart was heavy they would throw it to its head then they would embalm the body so it would be preserved for the afterlife the they would wrap the body in linen and put a type of liquid on the body
There were seven steps in the mummification process:
1: Announcement of death
2: Embalming the body
3: Removal of the brain
4: Removal of internal organs
5: Drying out process
6: Wrapping the body
7: Final process
Mummification was a ritual that took many days
The bodys were wrapped in linen
Mummification Process
1. The body is taken to a tent known as the "ibu" or "the place of purification. Here the embalmers wash the body with good smelling palm wine and rinse it with water from the Nile.
2. An embalmer cuts open the left side of the body and removes many of the internal organs. These need to be removed because they are the first part of the body to decompose.
3. The lungs, liver, stomach and intestines are washed and packed in natron, this will dry them out. The heart is not taken out because the person will need it in the afterlife.
4. A long hook his pushed up the nose and into the brain, the embalmer then pulls and the brain comes out of the nose.
5. The body is covered and stuffed with natron which will dry it out.
6. After 40 days, the body is washed with water from the Nile. Then it is covered with oils.
7. The dry internal organs are wrapped in linen and then placed back into the body.
8. The body is stuffed with sawdust, leaves and linen to make it look alive.
9. The body is covered again in oils and is now ready to be wrapped.
10. Canopic jars get placed with the body, these jars protect the organs.
11. The head and neck are now wrapped with fine strips of linen. The toes and fingers are the next done.
12. The arms and legs are wrapped separately and amulets are put in each layer to protect the body on its journey to the underworld.
13. A priest reads out spells to fend off evil spirits, while the final pieces of wrapping are done.
14. The arms and legs are tied together and a scroll from the Book of the Dead is placed in between the hands.
15. More linen strips are put on and every layer is painted with liquid resent to stick them together.
16. Osiris is then painted onto the outer layer of the linen
17. Finally there is a funeral and then the body is buried in a coffin in a tomb
