The Colosseum says very little about ancient Roman religion. Although the events held there were always preceded by a religious service or dedication, which was customary for Roman events, the Colosseum itself was an entertainment center, not a temple of any kind. The Colosseum says very little about ancient Roman religion. The Colosseum.
By our term of a weekly count, hardly any people died in the Colosseum. Yes, the Colosseum was used as an execution center, but remember it was an entertainment center. Events did not take place in it constantly. It was a very expensive undertaking to set up a show in the giant arena. The executions were held in connection with some other event, usually a gladiatorial contest and the gladiatorial bouts took place perhaps two or three times a year in celebration of some event or anniversary. Hollywood history would have you believe that Christians were constantly being thrown to the lions during the persecutions, but this simply was not true.

Romans would go to the Colosseum whenever events were scheduled there. Contrary to the belief of many, there were not daily entertainments there. However at times of religious festivals, at memorial events or the celebration of a current event the Colosseum was used. The festivities in the Colosseum lasted all day and most times for several days.
