Which of these words least characterizes the actions of john barsad in the st Antoine district?

Sympathetic

Where did the saying come from I have forgotten more than you will ever know?

My father-in-law used to say it in the late '70s and he was around 70 at the time. I understood that he had heard it a long time before. I do not agree with some who think it is an insult tossed by an older person at a younger one just to be ornery. I believe it is used when a more experienced person of any age is told by another person of any age that their experience/knowledge is equal when it clearly isn't. In other words, it is a RESPONSE to an insult to and lack of respect for an elder in some field. An example would be a surgical resident mouthing off to a surgeon and telling him how to perform an operation.

Who ended the Trojan War?

The legend is that it ended when the Greeks captured the city through Odysseus' ruse of getting soldiers inside in the belly of a wooden horse-god, then opening the gates during the night. The reality is that we don't know just what really happened. Homer's story was written down in the later 8th C BCE (after writing was invented), four hundred years after the events reported. Homer's was but one version. The bards used to make up the story as they went along, each version therefore different but following a theme. The material covered spans an even longer period. The hero Ajax was dead before the war occurred. The boar tusk helmet mentioned was in fashion two centuries before the war, and a lot of the background setting reflects social and political conditions of Homer's 8th Century. Also remember that the Iliad is not the story of the Trojan War. It is a few weeks of the alleged tenth year, when the Greeks arrived at Troy to have a second go at it after an abortive attempt years earlier. Intervening raids on other cities and islands are mentioned. However the subject of Iliad is 'The Wrath of Achilles' - in other words a petty spat bettween Achilles and uber-King Agamemnon over a slave girl. It ends with Hector's death at Achilles' hand, but Troy still going strong. We have to piece in other later bits from fragmentary later sources including pottery depictions and later tragedy plays and minor epics. The best guess is that there was a decade of piratical raids by the Greeks on the coast of Asia Minor and the islands. When the countryside had been thoroughly looted, they had to try the harder targets of walled cities. Troy was an obvious one as it had good revenues from servicing the trading fleets which harboured waiting for the right winds and tides to get through the Dardanelles strait to and from the Black Sea. When Troy was looted, there was little else to do but go home.

How do you understand words that were used a long time ago?

Read a King James Bible and Sheakesphere. You learn the old words by the context the words are used in and some dictionaries still have the words listed.

How does Achilles kill hector in the Iliad?

Achilles fought hector out side of the gates of Troy. Both talked about what would happen if either of them killed the other. Achilles drew first blood by throwing his spear at hector. Achilles misses hector and hector throws his spear at Achilles and he blocks the spear with his shield. This is what myth tells us Athena goddess of wisdom takes Achilles spear and throws it back to Achilles and hector does not see this. But hector had no reserved spear but thinks his one of his brothers is by his side. Athena posses as one of hectors brothers and tells hector that he will help hector fight Achilles. Hector is tricked by Athena and then has no choice. Hector charges for Achilles and Achilles does the same. Achilles has a longer weapon and so he thrashes his spear into hectors windpipe. Hector still has some few moments left and then ask Achilles to give his body back to his loved ones at troy so he may be properly buried. Achilles refuses and hectors last words is the Paris t who was the one who started the entire war will kill Achilles at the gates of troy where hector is being killed now. In all honest opinion I think that Achilles didn't have help from a goddess and that he had a javelin and a spear but hector only had a javelin and did not see Achilles spear. The he rest of the fight I think happened.

How does hector react when Priam tells him not to face Achilles?

Hector doesn't heed King Priam's words. He felt a sense of duty to protect his home and his family. When the Greeks reach the walls of Troy, Hector goes into battle with Achilles--knowing that his wrath could not be subsided by words of kindness and forgiveness. Because he lead the Trojans, Achilles felt that it was his fault that the Greeks prematurely won the war.

Why is Hector considered a noble character in The Iliad?

Although Hector may prove overly impulsive and insufficiently prudent, he does not come across as arrogant or overbearing, as Agamemnon does. Moreover, the fact that Hector fights in his homeland, unlike any of the Achaean commanders, allows Homer to develop him as a tender, family-oriented man. Hector shows deep, sincere love for his wife and children. Indeed, he even treats his brother Paris with forgiveness and indulgence, despite the man’s lack of spirit and preference for lovemaking over military duty. Hector never turns violent with him, merely aiming frustrated words at his cowardly brother. Moreover, although Hector loves his family, he never loses sight of his responsibility to Troy. Admittedly, he runs from Achilles at first and briefly entertains the delusional hope of negotiating his way out of a duel. However, in the end he stands up to the mighty warrior, even when he realizes that the gods have abandoned him. His refusal to flee even in the face of vastly superior forces makes him the most tragic figure in the poem.
