Whether Constantine adopted Christianity is doubtful - he was an initiate of the cult of Mithras. He did however use Christianity as a tool - he was looking for a religion to parallel his secular authority and give him better control. Mithraism, Isis, etc while widespread throughout the Empire, were locally organised, while Christianity which had a system of controlling bishops to use as tools. As the accepted religion, Christianity increased in power and influence, and then began forced conversions and destruction of temples and killing of priests to eliminate competition and also incorporating the other religions' customs (the titles of Mary eg Star of the Sea, etc were taken over from the goddess Isis) to replace the competitors by absorption.
