Because, just like we do now, they studyed art, literature, math, and many of the basic things we study now. They also had a democracy, Just like us. Our countrys language despite changes over time, modern greek is still recognized as the language spoken for thousands of years... Hope that helps!

It's not. The "cradle" of WORLD civilization is Mesopotamia (the Middle East, basically). Greece is, however, considered the birthplace of Western civilization and thought because they invented democracy and they had all those famous philosophers and scientists.
