One of the most ancient sources, Hesiod, stated that Eros was a primordial god.

He had no parents. According to Hesiod, Eros sprang into existence, fourth in the Greek pantheon after Chaos, Gaia, and Tartarus. Parmenides places Eros first on this list.

Later writers said he was the child of Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness).

Aristophanes tells the story that Nyx planted a "germless egg" deep in Erebus, and after a countless amount of time Eros sprang forth from it. Afterwars Eros mated with Chaos in the depths of Tartarus, and the human race was born.
