Pharaohs became rulers through birth- they were sometimes born into positions, but usually it was assigned through a strategic system;
1) Elders and the elite would select and vote for the best and brightest figures--be they war heroes, scholars, a member of the elite, or some how favored positions in the Egyptian government.
2) After selected, then the person would become pharaoh--but this often took place over a period of several years---unless born into.
A pharaoh is much like any other monarch; either the position is inherited from the previous Pharaoh, or the line of Pharaohs is founded by force and justified by divine right. All monarchies, if you trace them back to their earliest origin, start out much like a Mafia crime family. Someone manages to recruit enough muscle to make himself into a formidable force, and he then just takes over some region, whether Egypt, Rome, or wherever. Once he is in control, it will obviously follow that he rules by divine right, because if God (or in the case of ancient Egypt, gods) did not favor his rule, then they would have prevented it from happening.
