The feather thing on top of Greek helmets and at some point atop nearly every culture surrounding the Medditerraean was in some cases a sign of rank, royalty, nobility, elite guards, also for religious, cultural reasons, but also for the intimidation factor, when coupled with say the rest of a hoplites armor he could look rather fearsome!
