probably. as Cyrillic is sometimes written backwards- but is printed, typed, etc left- to-right, it is difficult to fathom this from written correspondance. Politicically it would have been correct for RH handwriting, after all we don:t want Lefty or sinister Communists here. Sinister means both shady or criminal-like and LEFT. in Eyeglass charts O>S. means Optic Sinister- left eye, the the numbers for cylindrical , axis, etc angles. In the Italian Navy artificial horizons were labeled S and D for sinistras and Destra- left and right , the neutral level position being un-marked and dead center, so it goes.

Who is Anastasia's mom?

The Empress, or Czarina, Alexandra Romanov. This was her married name, her maiden name was Von Hess ( Good German handle, right!) The very fact the Czar of all the Russias had married a German Lass, well, this was unpopular among the populace, long before the Reds got up steam. Alexandra not only took up Russian, but changed her religion to Russian Orthodox- and was extremely zealous about this, as surviving diaries and documents show. Maiden name actually Alicia ( Alice) Von Hess- again a good German name. By the way Kaiser Wilhelm was always referred to around the (Royal) house as ( Cousin Willie) not the courtesy title of Uncle. The Germans and Russians were on opposite sides in BOTH World Wars- so some distancing tactice- well were appropriate. around l9l6 Czarist Russia banned Saxophones ( to save brass for ammunition, supposedly) and also Christmas Trees. Christmas Trees are Germanic- but Adolph Sax- which sounds as German as ,well the other Adolf- was actually a Belgian national living in Paris. there is a stone saxophone near his gravestone- a Stone sax- how"s that for depth of feeling.

What is the origin of the word sinister?

This word has a surprising origin -- "sinister" is the Latin word for"left". Throughout history, many people considered the left side to be evil or unlucky (in Latin, "sinister" also meant unlucky), and the right side to be good. Left-handedness itself was considered a malady, and until recently it was common for teachers to require left-handed children to use their right hands in an effort to "cure"them.Similarly, in English the word right -- meaning right side -- is the same as the word right -- meaning correct or fitting, as in "right answer" and "legal right." This is also true in many other languages;examples include French (droit), Spanish (derecho), and Russian(pravo).Source:http://www.mail-archive.com/word@tlk-lists.com/msg00018.html

What happened to Alexei Romanov?

Alexei Romanov was murdered along with the rest of his family, doctor and servants. The report of the killing by Yakov Yurovsky , who was in command of the detail that kept the Romano vs in custody has been found and it clearly states that all, even young Alexei, of the Romanovs were shot and buried. In addition, there is an eyewitness report by one of the guards, Pavel Medvedev, confirming that Alexei was killed. After several months in custody of the Bolsheviks, Alexei was suffering badly and in great pain because of his hemophilia. He could not walk on his own at the time.He likely would have died soon anyway. The only way he could have survived is if the Bolsheviks, who murdered every other member of his family, actively cared for him to keep him alive. Now why would they do that? The most compelling reason to disbelieve any story that he survived is to realize that the murder of Alexei was the second most important murder of all of the Romanovs, even that of Alexandra. Once Nicholas II was dead, Alexei had the right to succeed to the throne. The only way to ensure that no Romanov ever again became Tsar was to kill the entire family, but Nicholas and the Tsarevich had to go first before the women. There was no way the Bolsheviks would have allowed Alexei to live.
