Ariande was a Cretan princess who loved Theseus so much she betrayed her father Minos in helping the hero kill her half-brother the Minotaur and freeing those that would be sacrified to it. She in turn was later betrayed by Theseus and left behind where the god Dionysus found her and made her his wife.
