Athena and Poseidon were fighting over who got to name the city and a more powerful god told them that whoever gave the people the best gift would get to name it. Poseidon gave the people a stream but it was salty and the people didn't like it. Athena gave them an olive tree and it supplied them with olives, olive oil, and wood that burned for a long time. So the more powerful god let her name the city and that is why her symbol is an olive tree.
