Alexander as king of Macedonia faced an uprising by a pretender Pausanias. He defeated him with the help of the Athenian general Iphicrates,

At the request of the Thessaly, Alexander successfully intervened in a civil war in Thessaly, but betrayed them by garrisoning the cities, provoking Thebes, the leading Greek power, to drive him out of Thessaly and force Macedonia to change its alliance with Athens to one with Thebes.

He was assassinated during a festival by Ptolemy, who took over power.
