Athena was the goddess of wisdom, and she played her part in a number of Greek myths. One in particular was the one about how Athens was named after her. There was a contest to see who would be the patron saint of the city. The winner would be whoever gave the Athenians the greatest gift. Athena provided an olive tree, which gave food and wood. Poseidon gave the city a well, which gave salty water. Athena won.
