Fearing that one of his children would overthrow him, Cronus swallowed each of them at birth. However, Rhea saved Poseidon by hiding him in a cave on the island of Crete and giving Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes instead. Once grown, Poseidon helped Zeus free his siblings from Cronus, leading to the eventual overthrow of the Titans.
