He had promised to be with her forever, but he engaged himself to Creusa, daughter of Creon, the King of Corinth, so strengthen political ties. When she confronted him, he told her that he didn't owe her anything, but rather he owed Aphrodite for making Medea fall in love with him.
That's when she killed Creusa, and her two sons by Jason, then fled to Athens.
