the captial city of the ancient Aztec empire was Tenochitllann. Long ago before the city was built. The Aztecs believed that they would be shown a sign by the gods. This is where they would build their city. The sign they would see would be of a large eagle standing on a cactus plant in the middle of a great lake. It would be holding a snake in its mouth. When they saw this sign many years later they knew this was where the great Aztec city would be built.

However they had a problem. The sign was in the middle of a great lake. They needed some way to create solid land in the water so they could built homes and irigate crops.

they did this by creating huge platforms made from bundles reeds and clay. they could then build homes and plant crops on these large platforms.

As the city grew so did the size of these platforms.

Eventually this beautiful and amzing city was destroyed but a spanish warrior named Cortes. The last ruler of Tenochitlan was the emperor Moctezuma. He lost the battle against Cortes and the Aztec empire was destroyed.
