She wasn't a greek god, just a mortal woman named Arachne with incredible weaving skills. She boasted that she was better than Athena, the goddess of the loom (and many other things). Athena herself came down to prove Arachne wrong. When Arachne was finished with her piece, Athena was actually kind of jealous. Naturally, she got angry and turned Arachne into the first spider. Ta-da!

The name was first called arachnodakryly, from the Greek word " Spider" Arachne because Antoine Marfan had a patient, a five-yeard-old girl, who compared her legs to the leg's of a spider. I don't think theres any technical name.
I think, perhaps, you are referring to Arachne, who was turned into a spider after losing a weaving contest against Athena.
Poseidon was the Greek name for the Roman god, Neptune. The Romans basically adopted many of the Greek gods and renamed them with Latin names. Other name changes were Zeus (Greek) became Jupiter (Roman) ; Ares (Greek) became Mars (Roman); Athena (Greek) became Minerva; etc.

Spiders and scorpions are both types of "arachnids." Spiders are of the class Araneae. The class name Arachnida and order Araneae come from the Greek word for spider (aráchnē), based on a story from ancient Greek times. Arachne was a woman who challenged the goddess Athena to a weaving competition, but lost and was cursed to live as a spider. (In another version of the story, Arachne won, and it was Athena's jealousy that provoked the curse.)
