Cuneiform writing - the making of marks in a clay tablet - is perhaps an early example of a sophisticated writing system. The slightly triangular marks are made by impressing the cut end of a bladed stem into the clay, then making permanent by heat firing.
Earlier record marks must include the drawings on cave wall. Perhaps representing the hunting prowess or the methods of killing animals.
Most of these early records are dreary dull - being accounting records of who had paid taxes, of who had used how much irrigation, etc. So, slightly embarrassingly we must concede that we owe writing to the Accountants.
