Cusco was the capital city of the Incan Empire and was also known as the "City of the Sun". The city was founded in 1100 CE by the Killke people (a people pre-dating the Incans). The city grew to prominence under Incan habitation and served as the capital of the empire from the 13th century until its fall in to the Spanish conquests in the 16th century.
